Sudoku for Kids

Sudoku for kids uses small grids. A 4×4 sudoku has four rows, four columns and four boxes of 2×2, and uses the numbers 1 to 4 or four pictures. A 6×6 sudoku uses 1 to 6 and boxes of 2×3. Every puzzle can be solved without guessing, and you can print them with answers.

How to play 4×4 sudoku

The rule is the same as for big sudoku: each row, each column and each box must have every number (or picture) exactly once. In a 4×4 puzzle there are only four, so a child can often see the missing one straight away.

A 4×4 puzzle in picture mode: each row, column and 2×2 box needs one of each shape.

The 4×4 puzzles here have 6 to 8 shapes or numbers given, and the 6×6 puzzles 15 to 19. All of them can be solved with the simplest technique: finding the one cell where only one number fits.

Pictures or numbers?

Pictures are good for children who do not yet know their numbers well, or who find shapes more fun. Each number is shown as a shape with its own color: a red circle, a blue square, a yellow triangle, a green star, and in 6×6 also a purple diamond and a pink heart. Since the shapes also differ, the puzzles work in black-and-white printing too.

Children can draw the shapes, use stickers, or write the numbers. Switch to numbers once they are ready, then try a 6×6.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Solve the first puzzle together and say the rule out loud: "one of each in every row".
  • Point at a row with only one empty cell and ask what is missing.
  • Print 2 or 4 per page so children get a quick win.
  • When 6×6 feels easy, the easy 9×9 sudoku uses exactly the same thinking.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 4x4 sudoku?

Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 2×2 box has the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 exactly once. Start with a row, column or box that has three numbers already. The missing one goes in the empty cell.

What age is 4x4 sudoku for?

There is no fixed age. A 4×4 puzzle suits young children who can match shapes or recognize the numbers 1 to 4. When a child solves them easily, a 6×6 puzzle is the natural next step.

What is a 6x6 sudoku?

A 6×6 sudoku uses the numbers 1 to 6. The grid has six rows, six columns and six boxes of two rows by three columns. The rule is the same: each number once in every row, column and box.

Can kids sudoku use pictures instead of numbers?

Yes. Choose Pictures and each number is drawn as a colored shape. The answers use the same shapes. The shapes differ in form as well as color, so a black-and-white printer works too.

Do the kids puzzles have one answer?

Yes. Every 4×4 and 6×6 puzzle is checked to have exactly one solution, and to be solvable by simple looking, without guessing. The answer page shows the full grids.
